All deviants can now write Critiques
Be a giver!
Sometimes you come across a deviation that deserves special attention. It catches your eye in such a way that you're compelled to craft a response that goes above and beyond a normal comment. Or perhaps a fellow deviant is having a tough time with a particular aspect of their work, and you know just what they need to take their art to the next level. As a good Internet citizen and art enthusiast, you want to help them out, but a normal comment doesn't quite suit your purpose.
For these situations and more, we've given everyone the ability to write a Critique.
What is Critique?
DeviantART's Critique system is designed to help artists get in-depth, critical feedback and commentary on their work. Valued feedback through Critique promotes creative growth as an artist and draws special attention to work. Critiques are also a way for committed art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and fans to publish real criticism,
May I have yo' attention please - Emergency comish
Early this month I was admitted to the emergency ward at the local hospital.
Needless to say I received my medical bill this morning and it isn't pretty.
Only having just emigrated and the government still taking ages to process my stuff to allow me to work, and Ashley barely making enough to just pay rent as is, this is something we cannot afford.
It's comission time!
Now, I really don't like begging or what have you but this is some serious business.
Below is a list of what i offer, how to pay and how to go about contacting me for a comission;

Happy Birthday deviantART!
Holy moly, did we just go full circle into another
birthday? YOWZA! Not to mention a year of me working here! Seems like
only yesterday I was submitting this deviation, celebrating my win over
Then only a week later I was thrown into deviantART's 11th birthday
festivities with a team and job I was still getting to know. It was
overwhelming, exciting, and nervewracking all at the same time! I
definitely had no idea what to expect.
In hindsight, I had nothing to worry about! The team
at HQ are a great bunch and have a fabulous knack for making both
community and fellow team members feel welcome. Besides, if there's one
way to get to know new people, its definitely with a party! Well, except

In our last poll we asked about your use of Twitter in promoting your Prints. Well, the community has spoken and a number of you have asked for some tips on how to better use Twitter to promote your work. So, we've put together some tips for you on how to leverage the Twitter platform in marketing yourself.
Twitter is different from dA, facebook, and tumblr in a number of ways. Perhaps the most important is brevity. Most tweets live and die in a matter of minutes. The vast majority of tweets die in the first hour. Also, you only have 140 characters to say what you want. So how the heck are you gonna use this thing to market your prints?
Here is a list of things that we've found to be massively helpful.
Build your followers: The more followers you have, the more networks you connect to. By building a massive stable of followers, you will increase your chances of touching some of them and getting your me

Deviousness Award Interview with Itti
What is this Awesome Achievement?
The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out
on the 1st of every month to one truly outstanding deviant.
The Deviousness Award for July 2012 goes to Itti.
Hi Itti! Could you please give us an introduction of who you are and what do you do on and off DA?
Hi I'm a mathematician living in Edinburgh, looking to get into computer programming. I'm 25 and a girl. People describe me as geeky, enthusiastic, thoughtful, shy, friendly, creative, and terrible at talking about myself.
On deviantART I run a little group called Artcrossing where you exchange art or craft gifts in the mail (more about that later
An Absurd Interview with megturney
Welcome to Absurd Interviews: Even better than winning a gold medal!
Nerds are gross looking, they said.
They have moustaches (regardless if they are boys or girls), are fat and have an obsession with their calculator, they said.
Well it seems somebody lied to me.
Anyway, before I get distracted by her totally gross gallery full of nerdy imagery... again, let's proceed to the interview, whall we? Boys, girls and everything in between, your humble fabulous:
Hello Meg! How are you today, after the excitement of SDCC last weekend?
I am STILL recovering from Comic-con! I brought home a chest cold, and it's just now going away.
So! What exactly do you mean with "Genie, Jafar, Aladin, Apu" ?
Haha, it's actually the cheat code to skip to the Genie levels i
The Tree as Beautiful Machine
While searching DeviantArt for images for the Earth Day article, I became intrigued with how trees have become not only such a central focus of our current environmental concerns, but also how they play such a central role in our art, whether as background or actual subject matter. There are so many Enchanted Forests on DeviantArt that it made me wonder if trees, so mundane and taken for granted yet at the same time so vital to life on earth and so steeped in myth, have always been the revered subjects of the world’s artists.

Harassment: A Survival Guide
It's no secret that the members of deviantART are an opinionated bunch! For good or ill, there is always plenty to say about art that speaks to them. This is great, yet amidst those opinions you're bound to get reactions that are nothing more than word pollution or troll bait. How many of you have logged into deviantART and been faced with this problem?
We've all seen it, been a victim of it, or at least heard about it: Folk out in the digital world living for nothing more than the joy of ruffling peoples' feathers. Well not to worry dear reader, because I've compiled a survivor's guide on how to slay the beast of text pollution: le trolls!
Identify The Problem!
Being the level-headed fantastical artist that you are, when it comes to outrageous claims and aggravating comments regarding your work it seems like common sense for you to set the record straight and reply to these virtual text hoodlums. I

Earth Day: The Inspiration of the Natural World
Since human beings harnessed the secret of fire the natural world has been seen by many
only in terms of how best it can be exploited of its abundant riches. It’s amazing now to
look upon the desert sands of the Arab lands and know that this place, the cradle of earliest
civilization, was once known as “The Fertile Crescent.” All Europe was once one great forest –
until all those trees were needed to create the naval armadas of dueling empires. Only the
Earth’s natural forces, like earthquakes, have been more destructive and wasteful than humanity.
“The Romantics” were a movement of poets, painters, philosophers and others who launched
the first Great Dissent against the idea of our Earth as being only a resource to be used up.

Blurple's 'Warm Winter Project: 2012' Challenge

If you didn't know, ToxicAlice92 started the

Brian Taylor: Outlaw of Independent Cinema
Outlaw at the Bleeding Edge
of Independent Cinema
Movies featuring the latest in high tech digital effects, eye-popping CGI environments and ear-splitting surround sound, are often described as “pushing the envelope.” But they’re mega-million-dollar productions that are delivered back to the studios by the filmmakers precisely as pre-ordered. Rarely is there danger of disaster, so what envelope has been pushed?
“Envelope-shredder” might be a better designation for Brian Taylor...
Who, usually in collaboration with partner-in-mayhem Mark Neveldine, has given the world such films as Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Pathology, and recently Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Awesome Unofficial CEA Mascot Challenge!
Hi guys! We do oodles and oodles of informative journals, but we also want to bring in some fun!
When we hear the term "mascot" it conjures up amusing and sometimes frightening images to dance through our heads. Images that might be of bears encouraging forest fire prevention, cartoon Generals promoting cheap insurance, a high school cheerleader dressed as a pompom-toting hornet, the horrible old bulldog your college dean pushed around campus in a baby buggy or maybe Eddie the Head on your favorite Iron Maiden album. All of these things do their jobs in representing their organization, their company, their school or their heavy metal band. They're thought to bring luck, to merge a group together in a single identity, they're spokespeople and ambassadors.
Here on deviantART, our amazing community's mascot is Fella! He's suave, he's devious, he's festive, he's

The recently announced changes to the core mythos of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the backlash from fans over the ending to Mass Effect 3 have ignited an incredible discussion about the rapidly evolving “collaborative” relationship between producers and consumers of videogames, movies, and similar “products.” Now it’s exploded beyond the secure borders of top news publications, gamin

Homophobic #ToMyUnbornChild tweets turned into PSA
Charlotte Moore (Cavatica) from Raleigh, North Carolina has created a PSA against homophobia after the Twitter hashtag #ToMyUnbornChild attracted homophobes to publicly announce that they would murder their child if he or she was gay.
#ToMyUnbornChild became a trending topic on Twitter a few weeks ago, and while most people used it to write loving tweets to their future children, some homophobes decided to do just the opposite.
@Homophobes, a Twitter account that retweets homophobes to expose their ignorance, published an article of 100 extremely homophobic tweets, which gained quite a bit of attention around the web.
Charlotte Moore was inspired, and decided to write and direct a PSA using the tweets. The video was produced by Brian Lee and Nick Heim.

@art_dAsh by DeviantArt at SXSW
People head to South by Southwest (SXSW) in search of that one thing that stops them in their tracks. At SXSW, attendees search for the next web sensation, the must-have app, and try to spot their favorite tech world celebrities. In the midst of all this activity, attendees look for something they’ll remember long after the convention is over. Rising to this challenge, DeviantArt created the #art_dAsh campaign, bringing live art to the streets of Austin while giving away Canvas Prints!
In the #art_dAsh experience, we took a ton of amazing Prints from DeviantArt artists and placed them on gallery walls set up all around Austin, TX. Once someone stumbled across it, they were free to take it by tweeting at the artist using #art_dAsh. The gallery walls featured the framed artwork that would be given away, while winners received beautiful rolled Canvas Prints. Not only did participants get to walk away w
