I don't think I mentioned anything to the effect that "good" characters are happy or content....that would be, again, boring to watch. The interest in a character lays in conflict. That means a dearth of happiness and contentment. Ideally, neither "bad" nor "good" characters in a story would be content or you don't really have much in the way of an interesting story.

I don't think "bad" characters necessarily have serious issues---I think "evil" characters do. Isn't that what we were talking about when we were discussing the "dark side"? Murder and similar mayhem does tend to come from serious issues. I don't really follow how else you think a character arrives at that point. Maybe you could elaborate further on that?

Ohhh, I see we have dissimilar views on what the "dark side" means to begin with so no wonder we're talking past each other. I really don't see anything "dark" about freedom from rules, personally. That doesn't equate to a lack of ethics for me. Is this what you're talking about? Or do you equate "freedom" with "amorality"?

Your example of graffiti and sex and stealing, doesn't strike me as dark at all, so much as being either neutral or in a moral gray area. This supports my conclusion that we have been discussing this issue without sharing a common idea on what qualifies as "dark". That certainly explains why we disagreed on so much. =P

See, we still have a bit of a misunderstanding. You think that all "good" characters are happy or content, and all "bad" characters must therefore have serious issues. I agree that most do. For some, I do imagine that the dark side would be more like a freedom from rules, freedom to run wild and do what they want, depending on the rules of the light side.
Let's say someone wants to, oh, I dunno, have sex with a bunch of people or steal little things for the thrill or just get rid of those restrictions. Break into some off-limits places, graffiti a wall, smaller things like that. Those people could be totally fine, just looking for more freedom or happiness in their own little way.
And the "good" guys could wish that they could do those things and be totally unhappy because of their morals and rules.
Again, this is totally situational. It depends on your definition of light and dark, good and bad, and how many rules and restrictions there are, how strict, what kind of things you define as bad, and the characters. But it's definitely possible for darks to be fulfilled and lights to be deeply unhappy.
But you're mostly right. I think it's mostly some issues.

No, I think there's a misunderstanding here. I've mentioned that I think dark and "bad" characters can be very interesting. But, as I said, someone who commits evil acts and is perfectly happy with themselves or doesn't have a bigger reason for their evil acts other than "this is fun", is pretty boring to watch.

In an earlier comment, I mentioned this level of darkness doesn't come from happiness. You disagreed. You seemed to envision the opposite. But I see we're on the same page now in concurring that this behavior must come from personal torment and deep unhappiness, potentially to the point of insanity, for it to be interesting or make sense. It's just psychological reality.

I have to disagree about "bad" people being boring and flat. In my experience, they can actually have extremely complex motivations and emotions. Maybe they enjoy killing or something but hate themselves at the same rime. Maybe theyre there out of necessity and struggle with either liking that lifestyle or hating it. I dunno. Things can just get intense and interesting from that perspective in a way that it cant always be from the light side.
Although you are right about the light side sometimes becoming another bad guy. I love when that happens. Its like when they insist that theres only one right way to do things and get all corrupt and yucky.
The conflict and intensity of the dark is much more interesting to me and i feel kind of bad for those in it. I just want to see them get some sort of reward ir victory ir acknowledfement that its not all bad...and maybe we can see those characters find some happiness.

Yes and no. The problem with such a character is that they are hard to relate to. They would strike most people as horrible and boring in a sense because they can't make that connection with them and because they would come off as pretty one-dimensional and flat (no complex motivation, murder-death-kill equaling sunshine-and-rainbows to them would be as boring to watch as a perfect good person).

The really interesting dark characters aren't happy in a long-lasting, fulfilling way. The fascination is in their struggle to address their issues, and their failure to do so, through various heinous acts. Even Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, who is the hero (anti-hero) of his comic series and whose day-in-day-out is kill-kill-kill and who almost always wins, isn't a happy character in any meaningful or lasting sense.

And "the light" does not always win. Sometimes they are just another bad guy.

Well, possibly...but wouldn't that be such a more interesting character? At least in some respects? If done well, I'd really love to see this done, possibly with the dark side representing more freedom from the light's rules (which, okay, are pretty much just obvious things like no killing/stealing/etc.). It would be cool. The light are too pretentious in some books/movies. And they always. Win. Always.

Yeah it was very disappointing to see who were the winners when there was so much better talent out there. I am even happy that i did not enter because I know I would be heart broken. They should though had opened the contest worldwide to make it more fair. Hmmm...oh well what can we do right.

Probably this discussion would have greater context and make more sense if abstract concepts of "light" and "dark" were better defined. But I'm inclined to think someone wanting to be "dark", at least in the sense I would define it, and finding happiness in that, has serious psychological damage.

Another US-only one. :( *sigh*

(I know it's up to the sponsors, not you, whether it's US-only or international, but it's still disappointing to read and get excited about a contest before discovering you can't actually enter it. I wish the country part was clearer.)

Who says redeeming oneself means being 'light'? Maybe you're meant to be dark? COuldn't someone make the right choice for themselves, and go from light to dark? I'd like to see that. I'm just sick of all the same thing, that's all.
