Lena's transformation is complete! The entries for the Beautiful Creatures  Light or Dark contest showcased Lena, a caster faced with the choice of Light or Dark, in the midst of making her selection. Lena wasn't the the only one with a tough decision to make! Judges and authors of the Beautiful Creatures  novels Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia had the difficult task of determining the top five winners from our 25 Semi-Finalists. Check out Lena as Light and Dark, as well as our top winner who clinched an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles, CA among other amazing prizes!

Judges' Comments

We each chose this piece for the Grand Prize without even discussing it; We found it to be true to the Lena of our novels as well as the film. We noted the charm necklace, the Chucks, the "Caster breeze" in the dynamic, curling hair, and the "naturalist" element with the doves. Well done!

This piece so nearly won the Grand Prize! The degree of detail in the paper cutting is so incredible, and the single splash of color in Lena's heart is perfect. Lena is very "Natural" here, but perhaps less dynamic in the piece we ultimately selected for the Grand Prize. Still, well done!

So cute, and so Lena. Clutching her notebook while the world turns into chaos around her. We really found this piece to be charming.

The technical detail - as well as the character detail - in this piece was overwhelming. We love the way the light hits Lena's face, and the charm necklace wrapped in her hair. Bravo!

We loved the "turning Lena on her head" idea - because so often she does feel like her world is upside down, and like she's changing into something terrifying. A not very beautiful creature! This one gave us nightmares! Amazing.

I knew from the beginning they wouldn't choose much works with obvious/photoshop use of stock images, yet those were pretty common :3

Congratulations to the winners!

If photoshop was not a criteria of judgement...if should have been stated.
I rendered EVERY PIECE of my work on Photoshop, sorry if you do not think of that as Painting.

I for sure will never even try to fit your "expectations"

Every aspect of my work was rendered in Photoshop, sorry it does not measure your criteria.

But NONE OF IT WAS STOCK !

Other than the allowed references.

Oh, a rush of comments :D

Firstly, I really tried to recall the word for those 'allowed to download reference pictures' during the competition, but I couldn't so that's why I used word 'stock'. I don't know if this word has some bad label.

Secondly, I used word 'photoshop' to describe digital collages I saw many on this competition (didn't mean that photoshop is a bad program). It frustrated me a little to see manymany entries nearly identical to each others, just only hue & saturation or other little things like those changed between entries using competition reference pictures. I thought they use term 'photoshopping' in English in same meaning as in my natice language, to describe when somebody just adds little something there and here on a picture and not making major visible changes. Like digital editing or something like that? Now than I think it, maybe there's not meaning like that in English, so sorry for that ^^' I can't understand how anybody can claim a picture 'made by themselves' only after editing it a little. That was the point I tried to say on my first comment.

I don't know if you painted other contents on your entries in photoshop or used some existing pictures (I suppose you painted them yourself)? If you did, for example the owl is brilliant. Don't let a little comment like mine to make you think you aren't a good artist! Misunderstandings happen every day ;]

No problem. I could see you got a little offended, sorry for that ^^' I do my best to get every day a little better on English to avoid misunderstandings like this. It's that sometimes you just don't pay attention enough on everything you write and that's when nuances change easily... I'd like to ask, in which meaning you actually can use words 'stock'? Vocabulary like that can be pretty hard :3

Oh, you did really good job! How long have you been making digital art?

I do, too! I love how they all have different style and vibe on them :)

My vocabulary may be a little different also, since my first language is Spanish.
But I understand stock as images not necessarily connected to with the project. and resources as "stock" :D connected to the project.

see, my understanding is a bit confusing also
