March 17th is traditionally known as St. Patrick's Day, a time to celebrate the Irish, feast, and enjoy all things green. It commemorates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Among numerous achievements, St. Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland, at least according to legend. Today, there are parades around the world to celebrate the day. And for many, St. Patrick's Day is a reminder that spring is on its way!

But, of course, there's more to Irish culture than green, clovers, and good luck. One of the many interesting traditions of the Irish culture involves the Blarney Stone, found at Blarney Castle outside of Cork. Visitors come from all over the world to participate in the castle's famous ritual -- kissing the Blarney Stone. While it sounds simple, this is not a task for those with a fear of heights, as participants must lean backward over the parapet's edge. Successfully kissing the stone is said to bring the gift of gab and a newfound skill in flattery.

Another interesting piece from the Irish culture is the mythology involving Tír na nÓg, a place for supernatural beings. Tír na nÓg is said to be located off any map, only stumbled upon by adventurers, and is void of sickness and sadness. Ireland's greatest heroes frequently visited this earthly paradise where they enjoyed the best life had to offer.

Feary SongFeary Song
I heard the faeries dance one day
in a time long gone
they twirled joyously in the fray
singing their faeries song
And then i saw as i did watch
a  man with eyes like fire
step foreword and begin to sway
to the ethereal choir
With skin like snow and hair spun gold
he drifted through the throng
the eyes of all who saw were his
humming that fearies song
After a time he stopped by chance
before the girl watching their play
and oddly asked her for a dance
bespelled, i joined the fray
twirling among the beings bright
mortal and Elvin king
by their magick, my heart took flight
and i began to sing
the words like honey on my lips
in language sweet our words combined
his beauty did bewitch my soul
no sweeter solstice could i find
the dancing grace of Hume and fey
twirled deep into the night
and his spell could only break when day
came shimmering into sight
At dawn they left, immortal fey
at the cockerels crow
i alone in the summer meadow lay
dreaming of tir na n
Tir Na NogBleeding with the sidhe
Can no one hear me
Crying with the tick of clock
Seeking out my Tir Na Nog
Tir Na Nog
Blessed land of agelessness
Bring me to you
To your shores of light
Graceless in my skin
Plead to be let in
Wanting my key to unlock
The way out; to Tir Na Nog
Tir Na Nog
Blessed land of fearlessness
Bring me to you
To your shores of night
Creeping through the shadows
I don't know what I can do
Have to find my way
To my land of dreams
Tir Na Nog
Fantasy so dear to me
Dreaming of you
Dreaming my reality
Dreaming of you
Can you see me, can you feel me
Losing you
Help me dream...
Tir Na NogThere’s a place I want to go.
SIlver lines everything there.
FoRget the world I know.
WaNting, wishing, wondering,
If I cAn ever find a place I belong.
Oh I kNow I can never go unless,
Unless, nO, I will find a way to get there.
I do not belonG here.
I belong away, in an otherworld.
TIR NA NOG
