I actually agree with your statement here. As an artist myself, the first was incredibly simple, and is only a double duplication from top to bottom, that had been painted mildly different.
If Anything, the placement of winners should of been reversed in my opinion.

Wow. The detail and execution in that 3rd place piece deserves a lot more than a $1,500 prize.

I also wanted to say that #1 was picked because it picked up the theme and feel of the movie, and the girls having a good and bad side. They seem to go with the good/bad children theme. The person who won said this was her good self and her bad self under the bed. It matches the theme of the movie. So congrats to the winner.

I can see why 3rd place is 3rd. But I honestly hoped this one would make 1st, maybe 2nd. I like the storybook feeling to it. Because after all, monsters are just silly stories told to keep us eating our spinach and keeping us in bed by eight -- right? And honestly, those are scary toads and turtles! Not in the obvious fear factor of 2nd place, but in the idea of seeing through a child's eye. It's the simplicity of the monster that provokes our imagination.

This probably doesn't look very professional, but I'm no good at explaining my thoughts. xD

I feel like some people need to realize that just because something doesn't scare them doesn't mean someone else isn't scared by it :'D
Everyone has similar, but also different fears. For instance, while the 2nd place piece truly /looks/ the scariest of them all, the 1st place piece actually voices a fear for me (and many others) greater than that of something in the basement. You can stay away from the basement, but you can't necessarily stay away from your bed (you sleep in it after all!). The piece itself doesn't look terrifying, but it definitely portrays that fear of something being under the bed.
Anyway, excellent choices and congrats to the winners!

In these contests I haven't found the winners matching up with the best work that also respects the rules. The first place work in this case seems heavily based on the official contest artwork at the top right of the page, turned 90.

#2 is still better than #1, and the contest admin should be ashamed about the lack of acknowledgment to jpeg/png rule-abiding literature entries in this halfassed contest. "Any medium" allowed those entries to exist, it's not up for interpretation. If they lost fairly, that's fine. The writers were left wondering if their entries were legit while ignorant deviants pondered the validity of such things in the first place. Because, you know, writing isn't a medium. I think I just blew my own mind, whoah.

"During the Promotion period, individuals wishing to submit an entry must follow the instructions on Contest Site and submit a piece of artwork with a visual depiction of the most frightening image from the Entrant's childhood..."

Last time I checked, writing wasn't a visual medium. Just because you put your story in a .jpg doesn't mean that it's an image (and just because you didn't read the rules doesn't mean it's a half-assed contest!).

It's halfassed because it openly promoted "any medium" which in itself was very misleading. I wasn't the only one, I'm just the only one with the balls to voice its unfairness.

"Use your imagination and create a visual depiction of your most frightening apparition."

"...depict the most frightening image from your childhood coming out..."

"Entrant must submit: an original work depicting the most frightening image from your childhood coming out from underneath a bed, from a closet, an attic or a basement;"

All from the original contest listing. If that's not enough for you, on the very first page of comments (the third comment, in fact!), someone asks about literature submissions, and the dev staff says "As per the official rules, it's visual mediums".

Again, just because you didn't read or understand the rules, doesn't mean that it's "misleading" or "halfassed".

"Any medium" is misleading, now matter how you slice it. The fact that we're arguing over these rules should be an indication that they should have been written more clearly.

When a written piece becomes a jpeg/photo, it is visual. Do you understand that?

Aside from this rule-following, any other "create" "depict" "image" key word becomes figurative, especially since literature is included when "any medium" is.

It's a shitty thing that you insist on doing--you stand your ground with your own interpretation of the rules when they obviously weren't clear enough. This has been a blatant insult to all writers who entered and the fact that you could care less makes you an asshole.

Seriously dude? Real talk?

The fact that you took a picture of your notebook, thought that that made it visual art, and now insist that it wasn't you that read the rules incorrectly, but instead that the whole contest is totally unfair, makes you a complete and utter idiot. I'm not an asshole for insisting that you read the rules incorrectly, you're a moron stubbornly denying it for not admitting that "Wow, yeah, I guess you're right, all the rules DO talk about visual art! I just didn't read them. Gosh, I'm glad I didn't say anything stupid like "Grrr, taking a picture of writing is visual art!""

Come on, read that line back to yourself. "When a written piece becomes a jpeg/photo, it is visual." Really? If you really, truly believe that, and that's not an excuse you pulled out of your ass to deny any wrong-doing, you're even stupider than I thought. If you take a screenshot of a Word document, it's visual art? If you upload a literature deviation, take a screenshot of that, it's visual art? Jesus, even the people who whine about digital art in contest comments have better arguments than that.

Yes, words can become visual art in typography! But let me say it again: You took a picture of a notebook, and called it visual art. You were lazy, you misread (or didn't read!) the rules, and now you're bitching about it. It's not about the rules being unclear, when there were MULTIPLE references to visual art only, it's about you latching on to your own incorrect interpretations.

Also: 1) Stop saying "all the writers who entered". Browsing all the entries, it's just you and one other person. Wow, gosh, the rules were obviously sooooooo unclear because soooooooo many writers entered! 2) It's "couldn't care less". As in, I couldn't care less about the feelings of an idiot. If you say "could care less", that's mistaken, because I really couldn't. I could care less about kittens, because I have so much care for them! But for you, I couldn't care less.

Whoah, snap. Thanks for proving that you're not an asshole.

Is it lazy on my part, or lazy on the writers behind the contest rules? The last time I checked, a jpeg is visual art, I don't see how that aspect becomes so complicated. "Any medium" means "any medium." No literature should have been specified, not vaguely implied.

Most of us got the contest notice with less than a week remaining to deadline, I don't even know how that happened, though I can't wholly fault the contest for it. What "normal" contests do (besides stating clear rules) is have a Q&A session as the deadline approaches, to clear up any confusion. There were several questions and comments regarding literature, which went ignored, no doubt by callous people like yourself.

My overall argument here isn't that a literature entry should have won, I'm just pointing out the unfairness toward such entries and the vaguely written rules. I'm not about to shut up just because you get off on being a dickhead.
