New Ways to Receive Prints Profits!

Tue Mar 27, 2012, 6:10 PM

At deviantART, we're all about supporting artists any way we can. We do this is by giving our members a platform for displaying their art, tools to exchange comments and critiques, and avenues for finding new friends and mentors all over the world.

We also want to help artists by providing a place to sell their art, which we've done for years through our Prints program. Because the process of receiving payments from your art sales has been less than ideal, we've worked hard on a new earnings system. We've heard your feedback and suggestions, and want to give you a preview of three ways you will be able to receive profits from the Prints that you've sold. Check out these changes coming soon!

Points, PayPal, and Checks

With our new program, we're adding ways to instantly receive payments, all of which will be found in the new and improved My Earnings page.

The simplest way to receive your Prints profits will be through Points! You will be able to convert any or all of your Prints profits into deviantART Points instantly once the transaction has cleared. When you select Points, they will be transferred into your Points balance and can be used right away! And the best part is, there's no minimum balance requirement to take advantage of this offer. Whether you make one sale or one hundred sales, you will be able to transfer your profits into Points at any time!

By the way, you'll soon be able to use Points for lots of other awesome things!

Withdraw as Points by Ayame-Kenoshi

For PayPal, the new option will be that you can receive your PayPal payment on demand instead of waiting until the end of the quarter. You must accumulate at least $5 in Prints profits to use this option. Each withdrawal will incur a $1.00 processing fee. However, we waive this fee for Premium Members.

Withdrawl via PayPal by Ayame-Kenoshi

In the past, only Premium Members could opt-in to receive profits in checks. The check option will be made available to all. Checks will be mailed monthly, so you will need to be sure to keep your mailing address up-to-date in order to get your checks as painlessly as possible. There will be a minimum balance of at least $20 in profits to withdraw a check, and your check will be issued for the full, cleared balance in your account. You will not be able to withdraw a custom amount for your check.

Because checks are costly to process, there will be a $5 fee associated with this option. Like PayPal, we will be waiving this processing fee for Premium Members.

Receive a Check by Ayame-Kenoshi

For international sellers, please be aware that, as in the past, all money payments are made in U.S. Dollars backed by a U.S. bank.

All deviantDOLLARS will be converted to earnings. If you have a balance of deviantDOLLARS now, when these changes take place, all deviantDOLLARS will show as U.S. currency on your My Earnings account. You can then choose to withdraw those earnings under the three new payment options. We will be sad to see deviantDOLLARS go, but they will live on in our hearts.

Stay in the know!

Keep up to date with the Prints program by joining the #printscommunity group! As a member, you'll receive updates on all things Prints related, sellers tips, and the latest news about special contests and events!

Premium Members, remember that you receive even more Prints profit benefits, such as the ability to buy your own work at a discount and set your own price on Prints to make more money on each sale.

We hope you're as excited about these upcoming changes to Prints profits as we are! We'd love to hear your feedback. These changes are coming soon and we'll let you know once they're live. Stay tuned to hq for the latest news! :eager:

can someone help me? i'm not too sure about this, once you say that one of your works can be sold as a print, do you have to make the print yourself and mail it or dose deviantart do that for you?
Ayame-Kenoshi Featured By Owner May 6, 2013
Once one of your Prints sells, deviantART will create and send the Print for you. :)

I would be happy if i could see the name of the people who buy my stuff :hmm: I only get a message telling me it was sold but have no idea about who has it
Bojkovski Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
"Clearing in 5 days" - what's this under the money amount in transactions? I can withdrew money for 5 days or what? because now I can't do that
TyggFestival Featured By Owner Aug 12, 2012
It does that for me too, but it says 14 days.
I think it means you can withdraw it when it IS cleared o3o
Bojkovski Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
Yes, that's it
I tried and that was it. Just I think that I read somewhere that I can to withdraw the money immediately if I have premium membership, but I can't, I still must to wait for that 14 days
ArtGirl810 Featured By Owner Jun 2, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Okay, I'm still a bit confused as to the Points option. Does it automatically let you know if you've sold a print, so you can go withdraw as points? Or if it sits there for too long will it get mailed to you as a check? If anyone can explain to me in detail how to sell prints for points, I would be very grateful! :)
Ayame-Kenoshi Featured By Owner Jun 3, 2012
If you have earnings from selling Prints, you can withdraw them as Points via your My Earnings page, which can be found here: [link] . You will receive a notification when you've sold a Print, and checks will only be mailed if you choose that option and have at least $20 in Prints profits. :)
ArtGirl810 Featured By Owner Jun 3, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Ah, okay thank you for clearing that up :D

Sounds great to me. Glad to hear there are options now in how to receive payment. Especially excited about the Pay-Pal option.

I wonder what I should do with the $0.10 CLEAR PROFIT I have made in 5 years here at Deviantart...

Maybe I'll buy a new car, or build an extension on the house....

.... whatever....
bcr8tive Featured By Owner Apr 29, 2012  Professional General Artist
I opted out of selling any prints on deviant once I realized that they were taking such a large percentage out of any sales. That plus the annual fee for full membership benefits deviant but doesn't benefit me. Points are useless as well, they don't put food on my table and are just another way for deviant to eat the rest of any sliver of profit.

vanmall Featured By Owner Apr 30, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It all totally depends in my opinion. For example if you would be premium member anyway then it isn't that bad. Also, if you want to buy deviantART products or prints from other artists then points aren't that bad either. However, if you buy premium just to sell prints then it does make things harder. As said before, it all totally depends on why you are here. :)
bcr8tive Featured By Owner May 10, 2012  Professional General Artist
I am a total advocate for other artists. I support them, blog about them and source their images like crazy on Pinterest to give them proper credit when SO many sites, blogs, Tumblr etc do not. I WAS a premium member here - I've been around a LONG time, member and non ... but I bought the premium to sell only to learn of the too high percentage - I've found ways around that .. and as for buying other artists prints ... as much as I love so many works from so many other artists - I already have a closet full of my own prints ... what would i do with others? Get a bigger place so I can put them in a closet ?? lol ~
vanmall Featured By Owner May 13, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes, that's why I said that it all depends. Different people have different interests, same way as not all of us have so many prints. ;)
narumashifan1 Featured By Owner Apr 27, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
That would be so useful, if I had points...or

I like this... Good to know.
If I ever sell anything I can see this being functionally useful.
Appreciate the update!;P

Really good news, I don't sell much --nothing really-- but I have friends that were concerned about the need to have a balance of U$S 20.00 or more to collect it in any way.

I have a question!

If someone orders two prints when you guys are running a Buy One Get One Free, do both artists still get the money for their prints?
(As in, I assume DA covers the cost of the free one?)

Sounds GREAT!

Ive never even sold a single print and all i need is Points?! that's it? man im bummed...
luciekout Featured By Owner Apr 25, 2012  Professional Photographer
now there should be some work done on printing quality, all I ordered/recieved was in kinda poor quality. Also print pricing is pretty unrealistic. I keep DA prints just because I want to keep the option for fan to have my images although I think DA prints sucks. You guys make pretty big money on printing so be fair and raise the quality of paper at least

"By the way, you'll soon be able to use Points for lots of other awesome things!"

Like what?!
PaulRokicki Featured By Owner Apr 24, 2012
You guys (dA) are still making a major profit from the prints and I know it costs to use your print labs to make the prints but I don't think it costs 80% of the total print sale paid by the buyer. Artists only get less than 20% for their print sales and you still want to charge processing fees to get the money transferred to us with paypal? Paypal transfer is electronic. No human needs to be hired to process paypal payments. So my 10$ profit becomes 9$ and the print I sold costs 50$ to the buyer and I'm not sure if there were shipping charges involved either as I never ordered a print from here. Either way charging 1$ for an electronic transaction with no human involvement is a bit high. when you announced the new paypal option in the past no one said anything about 1$ processing fee for transfers. Then someone got greedy and this is the result.

In relevance to prints and fanart:

Things in the fanart category are still ineligible to be made into prints. That's all well and fine, and I can understand why that probably is. But people often miscategorize things and place fanart -outside- the fanart category and then sell them as prints. Thoughts on how easy it is to work around this bar on fanart prints?

I draw fanart, and so I don't sell prints. I only sell my art in commission form, they pay for my time and effort to draw the piece. I have never shipped a physical copy anywhere. I'm not even sure what I think of mass produced copies. I mean, hypocritically, one can buy fanart prints at just about any anime convention, and even I have a wall full of them. I'm too afraid to do that sort of thing myself, sell fanart prints, from a legal standpoint, and from a moral standpoint it's kind of shaky, too. So when I see people miscategorizing their fanart outside the fanart category so they can sell prints through deviantart, it kind of, I dunno, makes me a little upset. Is there a way to report this? Clearly since the entire fanart category is barred from selling prints, we should be able to report miscategorized fanart prints, right?

....or just open the floodgates and allow fanart prints. Either way. I'm slightly indifferent, but at the moment, the system can be, and is being, worked around and abused. Just saying.

For prints? You could go to the DA printshop to view most of them
