Publish a Journal to Multiple Places!

Mon Dec 12, 2011, 3:10 PM

New! Post to multiple places!

Since the release of Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer, there's been one feature in particular that we've been itching to release, and we're happy to announce that it's ready!  Sta.sh Writer now allows for publication to multiple outlets, including your Gallery, Journal, or Group Journals.

How does it work?

1. Head to Sta.sh Writer and begin writing your entry.

2. Choose a skin for your Group from the right hand panel.

Screen shot 2011-12-05 at 8.28.50 PM by Ayame-Kenoshi

3. When you're ready to publish, choose any combination of your Journal, the Journal Portal (browseable by all deviants), and your Groups of which you are in an administrative class.

These options are perfect for those who may want to post the same message to their personal Journal and one or more of their Groups.

:megaphone: Keep in mind!

Submitters, be sure that you have the appropriate privileges to post Journals and/or deviations to the Group.

Group leaders, be sure to check the Group messages of your message center to approve any pending entries.

If your entry is submitted to more than one Group, only you will be able to edit it.

When submitting to a Group, you must also submit to your personal Journal.

And this isn't just for Journals. You can submit a literature piece or image to your personal Gallery and Group Gallery simultaneously!

What about skins?

For the first time ever, a skinned entry can be added to a Group without having Super Group status. How, you ask? Read on! :eager:

Whereas before you needed a Super Group to utilize skinning options, this ability has now been granted to Premium Members

So, when a Premium Member submits a Journal to a Group using Sta.sh Writer, they'll be able to publish with a skin, even if they are posting to a basic Group. Please note that this option is only available by using Sta.sh Writer.

Group administrators, we encourage you to fire up your recruiting engines, and be on the lookout for new members, especially Premium Members. :la:

Try it out!

These features, previously not possible, we hope will make life easier for deviants.  As always, we want your feedback!  Try it out, and let us know what you think.  As you saw in our #hq Journal, we're reading, listening, and taking all bugs and suggestions to our Product team.  With your feedback, we can make this product even better!

The most important burden to prove is that the multiple similar works constitute a collection. This is easy to do, for instance, if copyrighting multiple songs that were all published on the same album or multiple stories that were all published in the same book.

I'm having a very hard time writing in my journal at all. I figured out how to add pictures, but I can't add text, even when I go into Sta.sh writer, which isn't loading at all now.
I am very disappointed with this system and also very frustrated with it.

Can thumbs and images be used by premium members too or is it just skins?

Is what I did (posting a journal to several groups as a deviation) normal? :B

Ok now I'm even more underwhelmed. :(

It seems if you publish a journal through stash writer to a group, if the account does not have a premium then there is no way to add a CSS, even if the group does. The journal cannot be edited by another member to add in the CSS. So all my previous enthusiasm about publishing to multiple locations has been squashed. Please please please we really need to be able to publish to multiple groups separately from our own journals.

Also, I tried to publish the "journal" as a deviation to the group's gallery, and although the thumb did show up in the group's gallery, when I tried to open it all I got was an error message (so I ended up just deleting it from the group). The journal is still in my Stash, though, even after "submitting" it.

I must admit I am vastly disappointed I cannot use stash writer to submit a group journal to just my group. I do not want random group things going out to my watchers. So I guess I'll either use a dummy account with no watchers or use the old journal submission for my groups. I am sad. :saddummy:

It is nice to be able to submit the journal as a deviation, though. I just think people will see it sooner if it's a journal, and I do not want to spam my watchers every time I send out a group journal (which is quite often, by the way.)

I've just tested this. Wrote a journal entry entirely with the sta.sh writer. Published it as my personal journal.
My watchers can see it and comment, but why can't I see it in my journals? I cannot see it anywhere. The only way I can access it is via a comment. :o

I love sta.sh, but am a bit confused.

Are you sure 'my journal' was ticked when submitting? If not you may need to click 'browse' on your journal page to see it :)

I'm sure. I've since figured I can only see it when clicking browse. The trouble is, no I can't find a way to feature or not feature journals. Don't know if such feature yet exists?

You're right, that works. :dummy:
Just didn't notice before you gotta hover to find the info about featuring. Would've been easier if it was simply called featured journal instead of my journal.

Why don't you guys just add stash on the submit art page to keep things nice and simple. It would make a lot more sense than keeping it as a separate site.

I'd just like to comment on the root problem I think sta.sh has.

First of all, the name is confusing. Sta.sh? When a new user comes to this site, they probably want to start uploading their work. So they hover over the submit menu, and they see Submit Art (in bold) and Sta.sh. What are they going to click on? Clearly they're going to click on submit art, because that's clearly defined and people know what it's going to let them do. Sta.sh, on the other hand, means nothing to a new person. It's a strange way to spell stash, and stash isn't even very clear what it will do.

Then if you do click on sta.sh, you're taken to another domain. What? I can see that causing a lot of confusion and nervousness from people. They're on deviantart.com and people assume everything relating to deviantart.com will take place on deviantart.com. sta.sh is part of deviantart.com but it's a different domain. Maybe you guys are excited that you got a short domain, and one that makes a word if you combine the domain and top level domain, but for the end user, it makes no sense.

Then there's the fact that you can submit certain things two different ways. But not even everything. If you want to submit videos or journal skins, you're forced to use the old submission page. If you want to submit group blogs with a skin to a non-super group group, then you're forced to go through sta.sh. But none of that is clear when you try to submit. You have to read these blogs (or hunt down a FAQ, if it exists) to know what the details are for each submission method.

I don't know. I like sta.sh, but the way it's been introduced and presented to us is a major failure :(

Well I'm not even sure they can fix it, based on how they've set it up. It would help if the sta.sh page was at http://www.deviantart.com/submit/stash like it was, or whatever, but even calling it sta.sh is a problem, since that means nothing to most people. If it's designed to be the new submit page, they need to call it submit - not sta.sh.

I don't really know if it being on a different domain is a concern to anyone, but I would be caught off guard if I was seeing that for the first time. I'm used to it since I've been beta testing it for a long time now. But the fact that there's two places to do essentially the same thing is the main problem, I think.

That seems like another niche feature.

I don't have anything about small polishing features, but shouldn't you first do the big stuff? deviantART is seriously falling behind in terms of site layout and general design. It's not beepworld yet of course, but it's trying.
I'd make a specific list with constructive criticism if I wasn't so sure nobody would care because the priorities are already planned out.

For now it would be a start to look through community-suggested featured awarded DDs. Like collab support for example.

I'm not really sure I understand why a group journal posted with sta.sh writer needs to appear on my own journal page too. Can anyone explain that? My journal page is for things about me - not things relating to any group I'm an admin of.

It doesn't - by checking the right squares you may chose to post it only into the group.

Uh... That was the logical conclusion on my part but I guess something really is wrong.

I think they're still merging everything really. I actually checked it, submitted an entry to a group without submitting it to my personal journal and it did appear in the group but as a deviation and not actual blog entry. I'll be updating my journal soon so I'll check it once again then with other options.

It seems as if there's some technical backend code related reason why it has to appear in your gallery if you submit it to a group. I mean, what logic is there to submit it to your own gallery if you submit it to a group? :o This whole journal is about submitting things to multiple places, but forcing you to submit to multiple place at once just doesn't make sense. So I'd guess it's just like that due to the underlying code.

But who knows, just guessing here  I just hope they can fix that, or I'll be posting group blogs the old way like before.

Actually I think it's one step closer to getting us to v8 and merging all the submission panels so it's easier.

But indeed, it's kind of off-putting to be forced to mix personal and group journals even if it's for a while (hopefully!). I'm also a bit confused where I can see my journals which I decide NOT to submit to my personal journal. They do appear for my watchers but where do they go then is a mystery to me as they're obviously not listed on my journal list.

Yeah, it's a confusing transition :o

I just hope they finish it off soon and then write up a blog explaining it in detail. None of the "YOU'LL LOVE STA.SH" stuff, but something just bluntly putting out all the facts and how to use it.

QUICK QUESTION....
I'm giving the new thing a shot... It's my first time doing anything in Sta.sh writer, and...I've run into something of a problem.
I wrote up what I wanted to, spent hours on the formatting (well, hours off-and-on, had to do some running after nephews) and then clicked the button to go to the next step. Then, I found two problems:

FIRST,
I used the < h3 > tag as the headers on my in-progress blog/journal. The journal's skin's background is essentially black (it's this one: [link] made it myself, so it's not expertly coded...) and in the Sta.sh preview, the headers keep their average deviantART colour. I went to the normal journal submission option, selected that CSS, tried it out, hit preview, and it worked FINE--it appeared as white text, as it should.
So does this mean that it will appear wrong if I submit it via Sta.sh, or is it just a bug?

SECOND,
I went back to try to see if I could fix it and make it another colour (did this technically before I did the normal-journal test) and it didn't show ANY of my formatting while in editing mode--it was letting me edit but everything looked somewhat like it would when finished! Bolding, headings, everything! So I couldn't fix a thing! And when I tried and saved, and reverted, it KEPT one of the tags that I had deleted! D:

So....
How do I fix the extraneous HTML tags, and how do I get my formatting to show up again??? Any help would be extremely appreciated!
