Make Ugly. Get recognition.

What's the ugliest truth about Big Tobacco? truth® wants to find out and you can help. DeviantART is calling for submissions of your ugliest monster, giant, mutant or undead art. Download the facts for inspiration and get in on the ugly action. Winners get cash prizes and will be included as a part of the truth® Artist Collective.

The Facts

Monster

To draw public attention from the dangers of secondhand smoke in 1987, Big Tobacco thought they might try to "create a bigger monster (AIDs)."

Undead

1 in 3 teens who begin smoking eventually die from tobacco-related disease. Not undead. Dead dead.

Giant

A Big Tobacco document shows they worried that publishing that radioactive Polonium-210 is in cigarette smoke would be like "waking a sleeping giant."

Mutant

One tobacco company biologically engineered tobacco plants to have twice the normal level of nicotine. Talk about a mutation.

Step 1

Download the fact pack to get inspired by some ugly truths.

Urea processed in the kidneys is one thing, but inhaled it can damage the lining of the lungs. High concentrations can also lead to blood poisoning. Remember, water is good for you too...unless you inhale it. Even something essential can be used incorrectly.

Either way it's fucking stupid to act like it's bad just because it's also in cat urine.

All in all it seems like a grossly biased piece of propaganda, especially the creation of an "ugly monster" to be representative of the tobacco. I'm all for promotion of public health, but this kind of thing just completely invalidates the whole point and makes them rather in genuine. I mean from my perspective do they really care about education or just shoving facts they read off the internet down people's throats?

I agree. I think it's actually detrimental to their message. They also said that cigarettes contain urea, but it's a natural material and it's actually in heaps of things. Just because it's in cat urine that doesn't mean that it's harmful - urine also contains water and salt?

And some people say the same thing fluoride in toothpaste. :P

Actually there has been some evidence that fluoride slowly deteriorates your brain overtime (its a soft kill), like aspartame found in chewing gum.

There should be... It's a really good theme for a contest but then everyone else outside the US is limited. I had few ideas to enter the contest, but it may be until it's over.

Well at least you don't lose your rights to the work, unlike other spec work, and the rights granted to the contest holder are for a limited amount of time.

And on a personal level, I don't mind offering work gratis for causes/charities I support.

I've never seen that video before, or heard of "spec work", but I've definitely seen a lot of "contests" that are more or less exactly that. It's good to have a name for it, but it's sad to know it happens on such a large scale.

Meh.. I started smoking at 14 out of sheer rebellion and quitting is one of the most difficult challenges I've ever faced. I wish I had never started. The E-Cig really helped me quit. I used that to replace the real cigarettes, and then eventually I didn't need the e-cig either. :) If I just ball-parked the average price of a pack a day for the length of time that I smoked, it adds up to nearly $15,000 USD.

I'm sorry! :huggle: See if she will try the e-cigs. I used the Blu system for a while. It takes some getting used to, but it will satisfy the cravings. All that's in there is nicotine and water vapor, but it really does feel like smoking. They have different levels for each "carton" of high, medium, and low. I just stepped down with each dosage until I didn't need it anymore. Plus it's waaaaaaay cheaper. :D 5 of the little filters was $15 at walgreens and each pack of 5 lasted me for about 4 months and I was at a pack and a half a day when I switched.

I absolutely hate smoking. Why anyone would even start in the first place, is beyond me. I don't know why anyone would want to pay for death - there are cooler ways to die!!

I support this official contest more than any other I've ever seen. Well done.
