Thursday: Haiku Contest!

Thu Dec 13, 2012, 3:19 PM

The Random Phrase contest has ended and the winners have been chosen! Our judges found it a tough decision with so many incredibly random deviations submitted. Well done to everyone who entered!

Our top three winners are:

Deterrent Acceptance by slugette

Cold DigitSnow had been piling up for days now. The streets were bleak; the blinding white contrasting against the dark, wet grey of the road. The houses fared no better, their roofs coated in sparkling white and the rows of matching house fronts caused a dizzying sense of losing one’s way. The tops of snow mounds in front of their house had been muddied by dozens of feet as they tramped from the partially cleared, soggy ground across to the garage and back again.
It was the worst time of the year to move house, when it was too cold to hold the boxes without gloves and it could start snowing at any moment. The trip up in near-constant snow had only worsened their dismay. They had travelled six hours to get here, and were at least relieved part of the ground had been cleared by their apathetic and aging neighbour Otto, who now stood by his dining room window watching the family trudging around in the biting cold.
They had moved to get away from the cold, hard people of the city and, it seem

Congratulations! You will be contacted about your prizes within the next 24 hours.

This week's contest is a haiku contest! For those of you who would like a refresher, a haiku is a form of poetry containing 3 phrases: the first phrase contains 5 syllables, the second with 7, and the last with 5 syllables.  (We're going by a simple, English version ;)).  The phrases traditionally contrast between two similar ideas.

:target: Your challenge is to write a haiku about your favorite part of December.

Post your haiku as a comment to this blog. Entries will be judged based on cleverness, creativity, accuracy to the haiku form, and inclusion of the December theme. Entries must be submitted by Tuesday, December 18th at 11:59 PM Pacific. You may submit multiple entries.

:trophy: We'll choose five winners who will receive 800 Points! :la:

Remember that Give One, Get One Premium Membership is still active through Sunday, December 16th at 11:59 PM Los Angeles, CA, time. With this offer, give a Premium Membership to a friend, and you'll receive the equivalent amount applied to your own account. Give more, get more! :eager:

Blissful excitement,
Just to be disappointed.
They're not here this year.

Sad but true.
I miss the times when we went camping for Christmas with the 'clan' (basically our group made up of four or so families, plus other friends... That hasn't happened in a while, since my friend's auntie passed away and we all started buying our own blocks of land.

Really sad actually, since these are one of the only times I get to see some of my closest friends. We have to keep in touch via email and calls a lot...

Is it morning yet?

Filled with excitement,
I just a heard a thump downstairs

a window of light -
against the cold, a promise
of a different heat

black sky and cold wind
are to the hearth, as spices
are to hot cider

gone are the shadows
when every corner is lit
by love and good cheer

(or, alternatively)

where are the shadows
when love and good cheer bring light
to every corner

Despite the blizzards
There will always be sunshine

Gray roadsides and avenues
In a splendid way

My voice is ringing
Of winter I am singing
Times of believing.

These holiday cheers
Have us gather together
With bringing friends near

Excited voices
We bound into the snow banks
Dressed in warm clothing

You, I have chosen
But those dreams have crumbled down
I'm left here, frozen.

Hot chocolate's taste
Its scalding hot burns my tongue
Love those marshmallows

Happy rejoicing
It is the end of the cold
Glee, we are voicing.

Relax on the beach
Opposite of tradition
Palm trees transition

Renewal of life
Everything's coated in white
Beginnings arise

My lips are frozen
I find myself immobile
Gusty winds of cold

Feel a piercing chill
White clouds shine bright in the air
Breathing in snowflakes

Spying a lover
Pecks under the mistletoe
Caringly parting

Snow falls from the clouds
Misty air fogs the city
Stars light the night sky

Dusted window panes
Glittered with powdered sugar
And the gumdrop roofs.

Huddled by warm fires
Relying on family
The season of love

Slip and fall; stumble
Brush self off; get up; tumble
Stupid ice; grumble

Man with that big white beard
Hoove skittering- must be deer
Cookies are waiting

Anticipation
Emotions in overrdrive
This is Christmas Eve

Shiver in spare cot
Line up for the free beef stew
Most lonely Christmas.

Wrapped inside your arms
Comfort from the freezing chill
With you I am safe

Shopping for presents
We often forget the truth
The meaning is love

Rolling mounds of snow
Stack them upon each other
Frosty the Snowman

The tree remains strong
Through the cold and bitter nights
Lasting evergreens

Icy blue crystals
Sparkling under the sun
Their light reflected

The snow is melting
The coldness is receding
Springtime has arrived!

I do like Christmas and all, but a part of December I love equally is New Year's Eve... Maybe I will write about both...

The past has taught much
Fireworks burst to welcome
A future to live

As snow falls and chills
Lights makes rainbows out of night
An ultimate joy

Love, hate or don't know
Share your warm winter smile,
(: my gift to You deer

I don't celebrate winter but gifts are cool. What December means to me is winter and smiles even in cold icy weather 'cuz I just love it.
:D so I hope to illustrate a gift to someone can be as simple as a priceless smile and that it can be given to everyone, so people should smile more and keep passing it on.

Also, I had an extra syllable, by 'deer' I mean dear but its winter sooo deer as in reindeer works too.. bit of a faint pun, I guess? Hehe ^^"

And two more! ^^ I'm not completely happy with the first one (last verse), but meh...

There's a lot to like about December... Although it's hard to remember it's not about winter in general, but December in particular.

Cheers and smiles around

My attempt. What I like about Christmas is that families have this chance to be together and celebrate. Even though a family member lives far away, they make an effort to make it home.

Reunion

At long last, my dear!

I'm Australian. My favourite part of December has to be the storms. Christmas at the beach waiting for the cool change to arrive, is kind of nice.
