In the Tomb Raider Reborn contest, we challenged you to bring the new Lara Croft to life, based on the trailer and asset pack. These will now be sent to Square Enix's Senior Art Director Brian Horton to choose the final three Winners. Congratulations to the top 25 Semi-Finalists below!

The remaining 22 Semi-Finalists will receive:

I am not doing anything with Deviant Art again. Bottom line it was fun creating my piece, but the way the contest was handled was very poor. Step it up next time DA staff and try and respect your community of artists.

I don't get why people are so upset with this contest. 25 very good entries were chosen.
And on top of that, everyone can clearly see that this was a marketing gig for the new Tomb Raider game. So knowing this, it is really up to everyone if they want to enter or not. Nobody forces them to.

So it took the judges about 6 days to select 25 entries from a total of 5000. And it has been 8 days after and they have not selected 3 from a total of 25. Judges, get to judging. And I keep saying that not all 5000 images where judged, they just picked 25 and went "oh, we already have 25"

Worst of all that is happening in this competition, is to see team DA not explain or resolve these problems ... One art to be is subjective, But there was a briefing, there were these rules and totally disregarded ... will the company or even Brian Horton this knowing of these problems?

had over 5000 entries, I think it matters little, their duty was to see ALL ... not see is a sign of disrespect to the participating artists ... and the end result comes out tomorrow and the silence was what the DA gave us ...

I saw on the facebook fan page they posted the game's semi finalists, I still think it could this not go unpunished. not right, not fair ...

Behind you 100% on this comment, I think they need to answer to the community. We may be wrong, we may be right( Im leaning towards we are right) but I think they need to answer for the way they handled their fans entries and the overall DA community.

Not impressed by the way DeviantArt staff have handled this contest. I think a lot of Premium membership paying artists will feel disappointed by this, and rightly so.

Good luck to the chosen finalists. At least Brian Horton will take the proceedings from here. ;)

I think that the issue here is not so much about the art that was chosen. Art is, and always will be, subjective, so there will always be debate where people disagree about what they like. Congratulations to the 25 finalists, some of which are most definitely deserving in my opinion. Others maybe not so, and I'm not afraid to say it.

I think what really bothers people here is that there was a clear indication of lack of commitment and imagination from the Deviant Art Judges.

To have included an entry in the beginning which was a blatant copy of original artwork clearly revealed that none of the judges were in any way familiar with the official artwork, nor cared it seems.

Why bother going through the process of drawing up a complex document detailing the rules of the contest if you're not going to implement them?
Oh no wait, someone was paid to write that document.

If we're operating along the lines of 'rules are there to be interpreted as you will', disqualifying other entries due to the presence of a logo seems incredibly harsh and somewhat hypocritical.

Also, it is not possible to view and assess 5000 entries in 5 days. It is a huge task yes, but when dedicated people are put to it, it doesn't necessarily have to be a tedious one. (Maybe give yourself more than 5 days? There's an idea...)

I was naive to believe that DeviantArt still operates as it did 6 years ago when I joined; when DeviantArt was a site for amateur artists to display their works and get genuine feedback from a community whose sole interest was to nurture and encourage emerging artists.
Now DeviantArt is another corporate machine, like many other great web communities which have been ruined in such a way.

This contest was clearly set up as a huge publicity opportunity for Crystal, Square Enix and the game. DeviantArt allows them to freely 'advertise' to all artists in a non-intrusive way. In return the get cheap promotional artwork and vastly increased sales due to publicity. It's clever marketing.

As for the rest of the contest, it relieves me that the rest of the judging will be left to a genuine artist; i.e. Brian Horton who is very likely to recognise when work has been copied from official artwork.

Anyway, to those artists who feel disappointed by the selection I wholly sympathise with you.

To the DeviantArt staff: any credibility your site may have had is now lost on me. I won't be buying the new game, I also won't be renewing my premium membership. I'm going to dig out my old Core Design games which were made by a British company, back when games were made for enjoyment, not for commercial profit. :finger:

PS: Good luck to ~Sanchiko, my favourite of the selected finalists by far. :)

I think the process was something like...

Digital painting, yes. Photomaniplution, no. Digital painting, yes. Digital painting, yes. Traditional art, no. Digital painting, yes. Traditional art, no and we meant no. Digital painting, yes. Digital painting, yes. Photo / cosplay, no. Hang about lets throw in a token photo. Digital painting, yes. Digital painting, yes...

This is meant as a critisim of the judging process, not the (obvious) quality of the works selected. It is not the artists fault that some sort of bias seems to be at play, concious or unconcious.

bah! Can anyone see the resemblance between some entrances like this: [link] with this: [link] though the second one was no.1 on all times faves long time and didn't made it on the finalists and the similarities (as concept) are pretty huge for me... Where's the originality, or better, which one deserves more to be here, seen that the second one was the first one to post his entry? :O

Also this: [link] looks almost identical like this: [link] that again didn't made it and was long time on first page all time fav as well.... :O
I'm wondering what criteria the judges used, if they allow identical concepts on the finalists and picking only one from two....

Altough there are some great pieces that deserves to be here, not all deserves it though, even if they have 50k fav.

its because they only cared about the very realistic game looking pictures. the 2nd links you gave were very good and probably on the tops for us but they had a more cartoonistic style in the drawings. i think it is pretty lame that they only chose pictures that looked realistic game-like. their rules clearly state that it is a contest of "our invisionment of lara croft" it seems like they didn't even care about that rule in the end and ended up picking pictures that all look similar. im not saying that these are bad, they're beyond amazing drawings but it doesn't seem fair to put aside the cartoon-looking pictures because those too were beyond amazing. at least some of them including the 2 you said should've been finalists. at least.

Game art production requires speed, which is why digital art is usually the norm (unless for concept sketches in pencil, for example). I think book illustration (children's, book covers, etc) is still a viable market for traditional, among other venues. (Books are the first thing that came to mind)

Well, I entered my 4millionth PS painting and DID expect to win, but at least you picked the best ones.
Well done to the judges, there was a lot of good work (and a few not quite so great, so glad u didn't choose the guy who entered a photo of his own... bits!), but you really did get what the client wanted and chose twenty five perfect examples of the extraordinary artistry & diversity we have here at DA.
I'd hate to have to pick a winner from among this lot, I can see at least a dozen which deserve to win. Congrats to all of you, and good luck.
To those of you (myself included), who didn't quite make the cut, fear not. We tried, we learned a lot, we created some great pieces, and hundreds of you must have gotten very close to being chosen. If you want to learn more go back to the brief, how well did you fulfil it? Now look at these finalists. Each of them nailed it. If you want to be a professional artist you need to look at events lke this as an opportunity to learn under real world conditions, the prizes should be very much a secondary concern. The real prize on offer was the exposure for your work. All of us won a degree of that. It would be nice to get a report from the judges on why each piece was or wasn't selected, but obviously that simply isn't possible given the sheer numbers involved. If you want that benefit ask friends or acquaintances here for their honest critique, or better still do it yourself, no one is better qualified. Learning to evaluate your own work is one of the primary skills an artist must possess.

Sorry if I sound like i'm setting myself up as an expert, I'm not. I'm just someone who used to feel the disappointment of not winning things like this keenly until I realised how wasteful it was and started seeing how much I could learn. Only then did I start winning stuff! Good luck to you all (actually luck won't help, and even talent can only do so much, but it don't make sense to end a message with "Hard Work!":))

Your usage of blacks. Don't use black to shadow. Use colors to shadow. When you learn color theory you find out about how shadows have various properties including fill light which is reflected light from other surfaces and even the sky. For that reason a lot of shadows are blue on a sunny day, because the sky is reflecting in them. Using pure black as you do is a classic beginner's mistake.

:iconsethbrandon:
SethBrandon Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
First off, I did not shade using black. Did you click on the art or just look at the thumbnail?
Yes the darks are dark and the lights are bright, it's called high contrast.

Second, when YOU learn color theory, you will understand that, light color and temperature will affect the color of an object. I.e. the same object will be two different colors in moonlight, and torchlight for example.

Third, shadows are blue on a sunny day because of the color temperature of daylight that is being bounced off the objects around the shaded area, this is ambient light and is modified by the color of the objects it bounces off of. I.e. on the same sunny day the shadow beneath a yellow wall will be slightly warmer, than a blue wall.(still blue because of the original daylight's color temp.)

Finally all of this neither here nor there since it is an illustration.(note the line art) it is not a photorealistic painting. This allows for liberal interpretation of both color and tone.

When I said "be brutal" I did not mean "be inaccurate and offensive"

I haven't made "beginner's mistakes" since you were still a glimmer in your father's eye.

Holy shit,I am not sure I have ever seen a person be so ignorant of critique and have desire to hear anything that isn't praise despite asking for brutal critique.

My fault for thinking deviant art can be used as a platform for finding like-minded individuals who want to get better through mutual critique.

Please continue addressing feedback the same way that you do because that guarantees you won't grow as much as you possibly could. But since apparently you are already perfect and haven't made begginer's mistakes for 22 years, you don't need to grow right? You are already a millionaire off your art drowning in contracts and winning all contests you enter, right?

You can't be an adult, I really don't believe it. Get into real discussions if you want to grow and stop exclusively seeking praise from teenagers who don't know better. Or stay here and feel good about yourself, better for me.

I've said it before and I will say it again. Most very good digital artists are also very good traditional artists...that's how they started. There aint no button in Photoshop to create good work, you still have to put in the hours as well as having the skill. I can't play piano...I doubt getting an electric keyboard is gonna turn me into a musical genius. Same principle.

It would have been better if it was broken into categories, so traditional, digital, 3d, photography etc. Then picked a select amount of semifinalists from each category to compete for overall winner, least then there could be no bias in chosen medium!

Digital painting still takes a lot of skill, it depends upon how the final product was derived. Tracing a photo is looked at by some as cheating, while others look at it as a means to an end. What gets me is the way some work is criticized for the same things that others are praised! Some people's work is looked at as theft of other people's ideas and styles, while others are viewed as an original and astonishing masterpiece! I guess it all has to do with popularity and past affiliations. Which is why I say, just enjoy your own creations and screw the critics! People with open minds always appreciate true art for it's intuitive and interpretative nature. Originality may not win a contest, but it sure does fill the memory banks with more creative inspirational resources!

She obviously doesnt mean the artwork is crap, because it is good. Shes just showing her frustration like everyone else on the fact the 98% of the finalists are digital painters and there is no variety of mediums. I personally agree with that point, where is the traditional art that is more raw? If I were a traditional artist, I would be just as frustrated, because they should have just said in the rules, "only digital paintings accepted" which they did not, so your statement is false.
