The reason I never join these contests... the people who win them are already so awesome at art... You'd think for a contest with prizes involving LEARNING art, that someone who still needed classes pretty badly could win. But their art wouldn't be "the best" so they can't win.

Bleh.
I liked the Illustration and the 2D art winners. Didn't care for the rest much. The animation winner at least made me feel like it was a still from an animation. But...

You don't get it, though. They are great at art - But they want to become better. They want to rise above their current level - It doesn't matter how good you get, there's always room for growth...These people were awarded because they show even more potential, and a willingness to grow.
The fact is that not everyone will become a brilliant artist - They're encouraging the ones that show the potential to make it far. Call it an investment.

I totally get it. I'm an art student myself.
This is above simply showing potential. This level is already very well trained. THAT is my point.

because of the theme I think is very deep is not just a bathroom is the mood, is the place of intimity, you alone in the mirror with your thoughts, the day of lifes everyday maybe the monotony, the blind crooked the outside a little space of reality is like "you have to confront the world" with all the problems the pills the strees, that little place of honesty when you are alone.. its not a perfect bathroom all white and shiny and clean is messy, opaque almost clautrofobic, all the medicine is not good can you imagine a person taking all that medicine everyday? have to be hard...thats why I like it so much and off course the technique is excellent, the colors, the atmosphere, the details..excellent piece in my opinion :)

that's good.
Whether I agree or not with you, it's good that you actually give your opinion, beside just saying, "it's best", which people often do. (:

With all do respect- it's still a picture of a bathroom and to me, such attention is quite an exaggeration.

A lot of people here seem to think that "art school" is only for people who are still learning how to hold a pencil. Not at all. An artist can really never stop learning (or at least they should never think that they are above that). These prizes are great, and each of the chosen winners deserve every last bit of them. As for "why didn't they choose someone not as good" spiel, really think about it. Is it unfair for only a handful of swimmers to make it to the olympics when there are millions of swimmers in the world who are nearly just as fast or strong? Should someone "not as good" have the same opportunity to compete at that level? Artist grants, travel grants, scholarships, and fellowships are not given to anyone who is lacking skill in their area.

Really guys, if you "get good" at what you do, it will open doors for you. Don't get stuck into thinking that you're going to be a novice forever, or someone should "give you a chance." Prove to the world you're deserving of that chance, and who knows, you might just get it ;)

On the other hand, I didn't start learning the stuff that would have allowed me to even vaguely compete with work on this level until I had done some time in art school.

It's not about being given a chance. It's just that there's little room for an artist who isn't this far along to compete. Sadly, they need the chance to learn more and it creates a vicious cycle. That's why people get upset about it.
