OMG.

Congrats guys! I'm so happy for everyone who won!

To everyone who is overreacting with not winning;
- Stop talking about sob-stories, it's pathetic and most people these days are struggling with money. Get over yourself.

- Be happy for the people who have won. There were loads who entered, not everyone could win.

- This person did NOT have to host a contest in the first place, which by the way, was FREE. You haven't lost anything by not winning.

- People spend DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS on a drawing for a contest and yet they're still happy when others win, you only had to take a photo. Get over yourselves.

And for crying out loud.
Stop. Making. Yourself. Look. Like. A. Sore. Loser.

KAY?
BE HAPPY BRO.
IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD.

I didn't enter this contest but I've read people answering others in the comments with 'The judges had their reasons for choosing what they did.'
If that's true, why can't they write a little description of their reasoning under each one? Then it wouldn't feel as if they just close their eyes and point at the screen to judge contests.

I'm happy for all the semi-finalist but it's kind of frustrating when I really put it a lot of effort into what I wrote while others just said "I like this, " oh well better luck next time, right?

After reading the comments for awhile, I noticed that a lot of people were concerned with what they wrote. Which I completely agree, some people don't have heart-wrenching testimonials, however, they also were looking for "overall impact on the living space shown the entry" and "creative consistency in the space in which the Print will be placed". I remember one comment I read the person was really disappointed, I felt sorry, so I decided to look read the entirety of the reason given for the print since that's what the person was concerned about. However, when I saw the picture, I understood why a judge would not have picked it. It did not fit the last two criteria well. So even though some people had better reasons, those other criteria were important too.

I get what you're saying but it wasn't just what I wrote, I spent a lot of time thinking what bare wall in my room needed something and where something new would best look, I spent even more time trying to decide which piece I thought would best fit my room and give it the feel I wanted...I just don't think that was a good criteria to judge entries on, how can you really know how a piece of art affects a room if you're not standing in the room when it's on the wall or unless a person gives you a detailed tour of their room. And I think if you already have some decor in your room (creative consistency) then there are people who might need something to spruce up there room more. I'm not mad or anything, I think tehy could have been a little more specific with the criteria.

:noes: If its my comment that you are referring to, there is literally just about now way to make my house look up to the judges expectations.

:paranoid: Especially since I'm not supposed to be in my parents' bedroom, I had to make do with what I had at the time, dark walls, out dated wall paper, and insufficient lighting to boot. There's only so much editing that I know how to do.

What made me upset was that "reason given for print selection" is the first judging criteria listed, and I assumed that it was the most important. Usually among a list of "rules" or whatever, the first one listed is always the most important, at least in just about everything that I've ever done. It just seemed so... hypocritical of them.

From the official rules :

"Winners & Runner-Ups will be judged using the following criteria weighted by the judges in whatever proportions they deem appropriate:

Reason given for the Print selection
Overall impact on the living space shown the entry
Creative consistency in the space in which the Print will be placed"

So no, the first criteria listed is not always the most important. I assume that the judges know their work and if they choose those semis they have good reasons for it.

Thanks, because I only needed to be reminded of how hurt I actually am more. I was trying to not cry today. :/

I'm sorry that my house is so old and outdated that it can't live up to anyone's expectations. Maybe if my family actually had money, we could renovate and update it. Maybe then it would be good enough for people and their standards.

Sorry for being an ass, but I'm really upset still. I'm just mad at the way this whole thing was done, I'm not upset at you.

I didn't say you're an ass or that your house is outdated. Yesterday I answered your message nicely and I told you I was sad for you and that I could understand why you're upset, you don't need to yell at me because you're sad. I was just trying to make you understand that the judges have their reasons to choose who they choose, nothing more nothing less. Please don't be that depressed because of a contest. I know it can hurt to lose, but it's not worth it. I'm sure one day your family will have the chance to enlighten their house.
As I told you yesterday, please cheer up.

Before yelling with giant rainbow letters, maybe you could've read the first sentence of the contest article.
If you don't see it, let me copy and paste it for you. Here you go.

FROM THE CONTEST ARTICLE :

"We all have areas of our living space that need a little love. Perhaps it's an old painting hanging in your living room that's a little faded, or a ripped poster above your bed from your formerly favorite band. Whatever it is, we want to see! Whether you're looking to replace something that already exists or add to an empty wall, deviantART wants to upgrade your space!"

I'm not really one to make a complaint about contests, or things like this. However, I'm just so disappointed that I feel like I have to say something.

After I found out about this contest, I started looking around my house to find a space that I could possibly enter. I found a space in my parents' bedroom that I thought would be perfect. They have an entire blank wall, and its been blank for years, and my mom has always wanted something on the wall, but due to our extremely tight budget, they've never been able to find anything to put on the wall. That's where I thought about entering their bedroom into the contest.

I wanted nothing more than to win this contest, I won't lie. I kept hoping for it, for the sake of my parents. I read the official rules, and I found the judging criteria;

"Reason given for the Print selection
Overall impact on the living space shown the entry
Creative consistency in the space in which the Print will be placed"

However, looking through these semi-finalists, I have to say, it seems like least important judging criteria was the reason for the print selection. I looked through each entry, and the reasons for a lot of the prints can be boiled down to "I like it." When these came out, I was expecting to see many entries with heartfelt reasons as to why they should win a print. I know that I poured my heart out, I saw around four semi-finalists that had really good reasons, but the rest are... vain.

When I saw this article posted, I was a little bit upset that I wasn't selected, but that's because I thought that I had a chance. I also have absolutely nothing against anyone that was chosen, we all have our reasons as to why we want something, and I'm sure they are excited to see that they may be getting the print.

However, coming back to this article this evening, and looking through the semi-finalists, I'm now crying my eyes out. I wanted nothing more than to win for my parents, I thought that I had provided an excellent reason as to why they deserve something nice, and to see that winners with a reason of "I like this" were chosen instead, it angers and saddens me.

It just doesn't seem fair. Not at all. I wish that judging criteria was posted better, don't just list it, but list how important each component is. If I had known any different, I would have tried to do something better to make my parents' bedroom to look more appealing... or blank, and less like it came out of the 50's / 60's.

I'm sorry for the long post, but I'm frustrated, upset, and disappointed. I thought that I could finally give my parents something nice, since I can't afford to buy them anything nice, and that's why I'm so upset.

I truly understand your frustration. I, too, was pretty emotionally invested in this contest and felt like I had a fair chance after seeing how popular my submission became within a few minutes of posting it.

While my reasoning may not have been selfless, or even special in any way, I did feel my chosen print would look excellent in my room, on blank walls that I have been rather desperate to populate for a long while now. That being said, no matter how much I wanted to win this contest, I hope that the joy the semi-finalists are feeling right now will make up for whatever disappointing we are feeling on the other end of this.

Were I not a broke college student, I would have gifted your print to you, as I am a huge advocate of selflessness and art appreciation. Perhaps if you have the money, the print will make a nice Christmas gift for your parents. If not, I still want you to know that I truly feel for you.

In the grand scheme of things, you will forget about this eventually. You had noting to lose in entering, and I'm glad that we both gave it a shot, even though our outcomes were not what we desired. :)

I can understand what you're saying. I don't feel aimed because I put my heart while telling why I would like the print I choose, but I see where you're coming from and I understand why you're so upset.
It's true that some of the semis didn't give a lot of explanations about their choice but keep in minds that the judges can have different opinions, and what can please someone won't please someone else. It happens with every single contest, there are always people who don't understand the judges. Sometimes I also wonder why they choose this one or this one, but I know they are fair with the rules, and you can't know how and why they choose who they choose.
I'm sad for you because I think your parents would have been really happy with the print, but please remember that they think their decisions for days before choosing the winners. Maybe you can send a note to Ayame-Kenoshi to know why you haven't been choosen.
Cheer up!
