I'm not George Washington

One of my favorite time periods to study is the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States. I'm sure this is mostly because I'm American, and I really loved my American history teacher in high school.

But it also fascinated me how these handful of guys worked together to come up with a Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and an entire structure for running a country that has stood the test of time, though certainly isn't perfect.

I did my senior year term paper on Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of Treasury, mainly because I wanted to focus on someone who was instrumental, but perhaps an unsung hero. In doing so, I gained a greater appreciation not only for him, but for a hero whose praise is widely known, George Washington.

What interested me most was that Washington grew up as a farmer, and wanted nothing more than to return to life as a simple farmer in retirement. This general who fought in wars, negotiated foreign policy, and held the highest political office, retired to a quiet life on his plantation.

When I started out at deviantART, I was a farmer -- a regular member, working the fields by commenting on pieces, writing journals, responding to comments, etc. I may have noticed site changes, but only chatted about it amongst my deviantART friends, if anything. I never thought I would someday work for deviantART, but I'm so glad the opportunity presented itself.

As staff, I saw a different perspective than I did previously. Site changes are a big deal. A lot of thought, consideration, and work goes into them. And when they're released, there's feedback -- good and bad.

It hit me as I was reading Heidi's journal that I've gone back to being a regular community member. There are going to be changes, but the focus on deviantART hasn't changed. It's about art and community. That's why we're here. And changes are just part of the process.

I'm happy for the devious journey I've had and am glad to be back where I started -- but now, with a deeper respect and admiration for this great place.

Interesting - this gave me an idea to create a medieval-ish themed fan art piece representing the various users, from peasants to kings or something :P Too bad I am no good at all forms of digital drawing
